CONFLUENCE @ CONFED PARK

Calgary, Alberta, Canada | 2016

This 6 unit development is located at the confluence of a busy road, pathway system, golf course, and neighbourhood pedestrian system. The site slopes downward and overlooks mature trees within a park, and golf course and pathway beyond. The frontage faces a slow moving, but busy street. The architecture had to respond in a way to deal with both conditions.

The footprint for the site was depressed enough to be slightly higher than the park at the rear. This allowed for a central shared drive to access both halves of the development, with access to the lower floor studio spaces. The studios on the front had access to south light, while the rear units had views onto the park.

The front units had more urban gestures with porches slightly above grade, while the rear units had walk-out patios to the park and upper decks at tree level. During the summer months the park is activated with summer activities and golf, while in the winter months it is activated by skiing and the well regarded festival of lights.
